Why do so many people take more care in choosing what to wear than they do choosing a pet?

Pets have needs apart from the basic ones of food, water and shelter. I’ve seen too many people, even in my neighborhood, who treat their pets with all the consideration they would a chair, like just another furnishing. They discard them just as easily. Why do they even bother?

I think that people forget that a pet is family, too. It’s a “throw away” culture that we live in. I have four pets right now (2 cats and 2 dogs) and 3 of them were just freely given away by their owners who did not want them anymore. The 4th one was adopted from the pound.
I think a lot of people fall in love with the cute fuzzy puppy or kitten and don’t bother to do research on what kind of dog or cat would really suit their lifestyle. Then the cute, fuzzy puppy grows up to be an 80 lb dog, and they would rather get rid of it, then put the effort into training or exercise.
People tend to think “It’s just a dog” and not recognize that they have feelings, too.
