French language originated in France. About 90 million people speak French as a first language with another 190 million speaking as a second language. The Celtic people had occupied modern day France in ancient times. They were also called Gauls before the conquest by Rome. Western Europe was conquered by the Germanic tribes during the third century and later. French was proclaimed as the official language in 1539 by King Francis I replacing Latin. Classical French emerged during the 17th century and 18th century. Modern French emerged and evolved till the 20th century. France became an important colonial power during the 17th and the 18th century spreading world wide. The Americas came under the colonial occupation of France. French took roots in the region as a major language. But soon the dominance of French language amongst the colonized countries gave way to English. But French remained as the second most important language after English in the world.
A language can be learnt in many ways when your aim is to converse with the native speakers. The main focus in learning the language is to communicate. Formal courses are offered for learning various languages. But this requires that the learner keep aside free the time as required by the course.
