Holiday Work In Japan – How It Works

You might find it interesting to apply for jobs in Japan for foreigners while on vacation or on a holiday. Is this even possible? The short and simple answer is, yes, it is. This is one of the best situations you will ever find yourself in because you get to both earn and have fun. Here are some of the basic facts you might want to know about this program.

Work Visa for Holidays

Not everyone knows that there is such a thing as special visas that foreigners can submit applications for. As a special visa holder, you will be allowed to both work and go around the country as a tourist. This program is particularly applicable to 18-30 year old individuals who are citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, Taiwan, Canada, Ireland, U.K. and Hong Kong. Before applications can be approved, those applying are required to submit plans for a holiday stay.

Compensation and Work Hours

Naturally, working in Japan is a good idea if you want to earn more for your holiday activities. You can use the extra cash for shopping or night outs. Some factors that can influence the rate you receive include season of the year, employer, region and position. On average, you can get more or less 110,000 for work rendered. Hokkaido workers typically receive more because the area is a prime spot.

A typical shift is eight hours and you will be expected to report for five to six days a week. During very busy days, you may have to work extra hours and even report for duty for seven days a week.

Winter or Summer Locations

Special work and travel Japan visas are often valid during summer and winter when tourists are most likely to visit Japan. You can choose where to go depending on your personal activity preference. This is something you need to identify because you won’t be treated as just a worker. You will be permitted to use some of the resort facilities outside of work hours. This benefit alone should make work in Japan a good option. You have the freedom to enjoy after you’ve done your duties.

Rooms and Meals

In most parts of the country, accommodations can be quite expensive. You’d have to pay as much as 100,000 yen for a roof over your head. You can however, reduce this cost considerably if you choose to live within the facilities owned by your employer. Winter resorts in Nagano, Niigata and Gunma provide free accommodations and meals. Summer resorts in Okinawa, Kyushu and Honshu provide subsidized rates for board and lodging.

Language Requirements

Applicants used to have to go through a year of studying the language to get accepted for a position. Recently, positions have opened that don’t require this at all. Obviously though, you will be at a greater advantage if you know how to speak in Japanese. You might get a better post and better pay if you take the time to learn the language. Also, employers will find language proficiency quite impressive.

Why choose to just go on vacation when you can also work in Japan? Even if you don’t need the extra cash for exploring the country, getting a holiday job there is still a good idea. If anything else, it is an excellent way to get to know a completely different culture that is entirely inspiring.
